So, You Want To Quit Smoking? Good For You

Posted by Tim

So you’ve finally made the decision to stop smoking? I’m assuming that because you’re reading this article. As someone who smoked a pack a day for fifteen years, I want to let you in on a few secrets that helped me finally stop once and for all. Hopefully these tips will help you in your quest to stop smoking. And I’m not even going to try to sell you anything to help you. After quitting myself, I’ve realized that you were given everything you need to stop by virtue of being born. In any case, here are the things that I learned about quitting smoking through my own process of quitting.

It’s Not As Hard As You’ve Been Lead To Believe - All of the ads you see and every news story ever made on quitting smoking espouses how difficult it will be to stop. As someone who has done it, let me let you in on a little secret. It’s not that hard to quit. Think about it. All you have to do is not smoke. That’s it.

Don’t Buy Into The Hype - This one coincides with the first. There is a ton of hype surrounding quitting smoking, and almost all of it is from people and companies trying to sell you something. Think about it. The harder someone believes it is to quit, the more help they think they will need, and subsequently the more money they will spend for that ‘help’.

Food Doesn’t Taste Better - Many people say that after quitting food tastes better. For me this wasn’t true, food tastes the same as it did before. Besidess, this is no real reason to stop anyway, so just get this idea out of your head altogether. There are a hundred better reasons to quit (if you need any).

It’s How You Think About Smoking - To me, this was it. This was my big realization. When I changed the way I thought about smoking, the act of actually smoking began to change. I started to think about how truly gross smoking is. I started to think about how when I was a kid, how disgusting I thought smoking was. I started to think about how I always had to make sure I had enough cigarettes and what a pain in the butt that was. I started to think about the cost and how much money smoking was truly costing me.

Hopefully these realizations will help you. They would have helped me when I was quitting. The bottom line is that you can do it, just as long as you believe you can. It sounds corny, I know, but it’s true. Many of the people I know that still smoke simply don’t believe that they can quit. The truth is that they can, and you can too.
